Q&A: Is it possible to power and connect a GeoWAN Gateway to an ethernet port in a tunnel?

Question: Is it possible to power and connect a GeoWAN™ Gateway to an ethernet port in a tunnel? We have a project where we need to install GeoWAN™ Gateways in a tunnel more than 1 km underground and connect them to the Wi-Fi in the tunnels via ethernet. There is no cellular coverage in the area we intend to monitor. Which connectivity alternatives do GeoWAN™ Gateways offer?

Answer: GeoWAN™ Gateways can be connected to third party LAN networks, as long as the network owner allows communication in the required TCP/IP ports. Our Gateways can connect to both ethernet and Wi-Fi networks. In terms of power for the Gateway, there are two options:

  • Mains power for the PoE+ injector. The ethernet cable from the PoE+ injector to the Gateway can be extended up to 100m.
  • The ethernet cable connected to a PoE+ capable switch - note that most "ethernet ports" in your average industrial site/office are not going to be PoE+ enabled, so this will need to be verified.
